IRS Computers Delayed Electronic Tax Filing

If you recently tried filing your individual tax return online, you probably experienced difficulty completing the process.

Due to computer system problems, the IRS temporarily suspended the electronic filing of tax returns last week.

Several tax processing systems, including the e-file feature, shut down because of a “hardware failure,” according to the IRS. Its website remained available, but “Where’s my refund?” and other services weren’t responding.

Taxpayers could continue to send electronic returns to their CPAs and other providers, but those companies couldn’t submit tax returns until the IRS fixed its systems.

Despite panic from taxpayers and tax professionals, IRS systems resumed their normal capabilities within a day. If you filed a return before February 3, your return was not affected.

IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said taxpayers should see little-to-no effect on their returns or refunds. The IRS expects 90 percent of taxpayers to receive refunds within the next three weeks.
